Inland Water Quality and Contamination

European Urban Atlas Impervious Areas and Sealing Levels WaterConsumptio Services Water Quality Services

Service Description

The product range within the Inland Water Quality / Contamination Service block is determined by the wide range of requirements resulting from the new and heterogeneous demands occurring by the practical implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). A specific need for new and spatial explicit data sets has been expressed by a large range of users obliged to implement this Directive on international, national, regional and local level.

Answering on these user requirements a service portfolio has been defined with operational services, representing all value adding steps within a complete supply chain. As there are differences in (a) the ecological/environmental circumstances throughout Europe and (b) in national / regional philosophy with which methodology/tools the implementation of the WFD is and should be done, a set of products have been defined and will be produced for specific implementation sites, i.e. river basins.

In general the specific services are:

  • Mapping Products based on high and/or medium resolution satellite imagery, as input to downstream products/services and to be used directly by users for other relevant tasks not covered by GSE Land
  • General GIS data sets required for spatially explicit working and reporting on issues related to the WFD (e.g. hydrological units)
  • Specific Water Quality models with focus on Nutrients and Pesticides as the main source of concern with respect to diffuse pollution resulting from agriculture.

User testimonial

The Agence de l'eau Rhin-Meuse has evaluated the M2.1 product in the Saar-Mosel implementation site. The overall impression for this product is quite positive and the validation report has been delivered as well.

The M2.1 product has also been evaluated by the FAL-LR Braunschweig user (on behalf of FGG-Elbe) in the Weser implementation site.

The WA 1.1 for the Ebro has been delivered to the Ebro Water Agency (Zaragoza, Spain) in April 2008. The main advantage of the service is the fast provision of yearly updated volume maps based on a flexible spatial unit of analysis, that can be very useful for the decision making on the distribution of the water concessions.

“The Research Programme for Integrated River Basin Management aims at a comprehensive understanding of the eutrophication process of surface waters. The objective of this research programme is to assess the state of catchments and water bodies, the impacts of loading on freshwater ecosystems and the mitigation measures. The services delivered within the framework of the GSE Land project provide us with information of vegetation cover development in catchment scale resolution. The data thus produced will be used, e.g., in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and in monitoring of the environmental impacts of EU's agri-environmental policy. This new information with good quality and appropriate resolution allows us to apply catchment scale nutrient leaching models more efficiently and precisely.”
Prof. Seppo Rekolainen, Programme Manager of The Research Programme for Integrated River Basin Management
